Job Duties:
  • Under the direction of Opinions Counsel, this position prepares official and informal opinions for issuance and oversees the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General.
  • Reviews opinion drafts for substantive accuracy and edits them as necessary for style, clarity, and proper citation according to conventions of the Bluebook. Conducts legal research as necessary and drafts some opinions as assigned.
  • Transmits approved opinions to clients and arranges for the publication of official opinions on the internet.
  • Assists in developing and improving public access to official opinions of the Attorney General issued throughout the history of the Office.
  • Oversees the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General by collecting and editing yearly submissions provided by other Divisions of the Office and by compiling all official opinions issued during a given year for inclusion in the book.
  • Creates all other data elements needed for the book, including a comprehensive subject index, and works with publishers to ensure timely publication of the book by May 1 of each year as mandated by 2.2-516 of the Code of Virginia.
  • Additional duties include preparing weekly opinion status reports and maintaining opinions files according to file retention schedules, as well as legislative bill reviews as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A comprehensive understanding of foundational legal principles is essential, accompanied by adeptness in conducting thorough legal research across various platforms, encompassing both traditional print and digital resources.
  • Proficiency in resolving intricate or unprecedented legal issues, including those of first impression, is crucial.
  • Effective communication, both oral and written, is paramount, underscored by superior skills in writing, grammar, and meticulous proofreading.
  • Attention to detail is of the utmost importance, complemented by proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Word.
  • Have the ability to organize tasks, establish priorities, and foster positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, support staff, government officials, vendors, and the public is vital.
  • Diligently maintaining records and preparing pertinent reports and correspondence further contributes to the successful execution of legal responsibilities.
  • Awaiting an admission or already admitted to the Virginia State Bar and be a member in good standing.
