Job Duties:
The attorney in this position will provide both advice and litigation services to Virginia's Department of Corrections, Department of Juvenile Justice and Parole Board. Duties of this position include significant client contact and handling civil litigation in both state and federal courts. The litigation includes Section 1983 civil rights actions, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complaints, Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) cases, Virginia Tort Claims Act cases and some habeas petitions. This position is located in Richmond, Virginia reporting directly to the Chief of the Correctional Litigation Section. The position will involve some litigation-related travel.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • All candidates must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases.

Additional Considerations:
A minimum of one to two years' relevant experience is preferred.
