The Underwriting Counsel will collaborate closely with underwriting, claims, and regulatory teams to draft, review, and enhance insurance policies, endorsements, and related forms. This position will meaningfully impact the growth and success of the US business units and contribute as a leader within the US leadership team.
How You Will Contribute:
- Work closely with underwriting teams to create and refine insurance products, ensuring they meet market needs and regulatory standards.
- Work in conjunction with our carrier partners, confirm approved products for delegated authorities and program management agreements.
- Draft policy forms and endorsements for new products.
- Analyze competitor insurance policies for underwriting teams to provide insights/recommendations for product enhancements.
- Draft manuscript and bespoke endorsements.
- Coordinate admitted filing requests and liaise with carriers on admitted filing projects, including the drafting of state amendatory endorsements and notices.
- Maintain forms library for all underwriting teams.
- Participate in the IT implementation and testing of new products or forms in underwriting system.
- Provide training and guidance to underwriting and claims teams on policy language, coverage intent, and regulatory requirements.
- Stay current and emerging underwriting risk and coverage trends.
- Legal review of marketing materials, website and social media posts.
- Draft and maintain various NDA, warranty and notice document templates.
- Review insurance/reinsurance binders and contracts and amendments.
- Serve as licensing contact for all Nexus licenses (MGA, TPA, surplus lines).
- Review new program management and delegated authority agreements.
- Review new legislation and notice requirements and provide guidance to underwriting teams on compliance.
Skills & Experience to Be Successful:
- Familiarity with admitted and surplus lines-specific legal issues across property and casualty insurance products, the business of insurance and insurance regulation
- 5+ years of experience in either in-house counsel role at an insurance carrier/broker or a law firm
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with colleagues across multiple departments
- Focused attention to detail and honed analytical, drafting and problem-solving skills
Pay Range
$100,000 - $150,000 Annual
The pay range provided above is made in good faith and based on our lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and takes into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for the role.
