Primary Objectives
The primary duties of this role are to assist with reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts to provide engineering and other professional services and provide legal support for project issues. This person will focus on building a trusted legal partnership with senior leadership and staff. More specific duties include but are not limited to:
  • Review, negotiate, draft, enforce, and defend engineering professional services contracts and support business / corporate transactions as necessary
  • Provide legal support in conducting risk assessment of contracts, scopes of work, and projects
  • Advise and provide legal assistance with project management on contract administration and claims avoidance
  • Support project teams, management, and in-house claims attorneys when project issues and/or claims arise
  • Take the lead role on routine and complex legal assignments
  • Collaborate with business group counsel to address contractual items, project issues and as necessary to deliver holistic legal support
  • Summarize and explain, both verbally and in writing, legal terms and risks for senior leadership and project teams
  • Actively participate in periodic project review meetings with operations and business group leadership
  • In conjunction with management and the Legal Department, develop and implement proactive protocols to routinely identify and manage project risk within the company's operations
  • Research and advise on legal issues
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and processes to improve efficiency and risk management
  • Support and implement Legal Department initiatives including training programs for operational staff
  • Review company policies and practices to promote and adhere to company's goals and compliance with applicable laws
  • Perform other duties as needed across all An Employee-Owned Design Firm companies

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school
  • A minimum of 10 years progressive experience practicing law, including law firm experience
  • Active license to practice law in California
  • Experience in engineering, architecture and/or construction law; experience should include strong drafting and negotiation skills with complex agreements.
  • Aptitude to identify and manage risk, particularly related to projects in the AEC industry.
  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and effective communication skills to interact across the organization, with clients, and third parties
  • Strong teamwork sills, emotional intelligence, and ability to lead through trusted advising
  • Aptitude to thrive in dynamic environment and manage competing demands
  • Willingness to travel
