Overview:KBB is seeking a part-time or full-time Litigation Associate with 7+ years' experience to join KBB's public agency law practice and lead its litigation practice. KBB is a small firm that principally represents cities, successor agencies, housing authorities, joint powers authorities, and special districts primarily located across the Southern California region. KBB's main office is located in Los Angeles, CA. However, KBB also has an office in Florida. Applicants who have held the position of city attorney, assistant city attorney, or deputy city attorney are preferred but attorneys with equivalent experience will also be considered. All applicants must be an active member of the California State Bar. Strong analytical and writing skills and excellent communication skills are required. The selected attorney is expected to work independently, under the supervision of a partner, and should be highly motivated and a self-starter. A strong interest in public or municipal law is desired. Extensive trial skills and experience in litigating public law matters such as land use, environmental, CEQA, and public contract, etc., is preferred. Attendance at City Council or other public agency meetings will be required as needed. Compensation is dependent on experience and qualifications. Benefits include health care and a 401(k) plan.
Duties:
- Assist with handling litigation matters filed by or against public agency clients, including Cities, Successor Agencies, Housing Authorities, and other public entities.
- Conduct legal research and prepare complaints, answers, motions, briefs, memoranda, and other litigation-related documents.
- Work on discovery matters, including preparing and responding to discovery requests.
- Prepare for and participate in depositions, hearings, and other litigation proceedings.
- Represent public agency clients in litigation and administrative hearings.
- Assist with investigating and developing strategies for litigated matters.
- Perform legal research and prepare written analyses regarding municipal legal issues on behalf of public agency clients.
- Represent clients before the courts of California, the courts of the United States, and administrative agencies.
- Communicate and coordinate with public agency clients, legislative bodies, and staff regarding litigation matters.
- Attend City Council meetings and other public meetings as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills:
- 7+ years' litigation experience.
- Extensive trial skills and experience in litigating public law matters such as land use, environmental, CEQA, and public contract, etc.
- Experience in CEQA and writs of mandate matters.
- Strong research skills utilizing Westlaw and CoCounsel to support complex legal issues.
- Proven ability to draft clear and persuasive legal documents including motions, contracts, and pleadings.
- Excellent communication skills for client interaction and courtroom advocacy.
- Skilled in legal negotiation to achieve favorable outcomes for clients while maintaining professionalism.
- Ability to analyze statutory laws thoroughly and apply them effectively within diverse legal contexts.
