For over 50 years, Legal Aid of East Tennessee has worked to build stronger communities and improve lives by providing high-quality legal services free of charge to qualifying individuals in areas such as consumer, housing, family, public benefits, and a range of other miscellaneous matters. We are advocates for the elderly, for families, and for victims of domestic violence and work closely with our clients to help navigate legal challenges and seek out justice. We are seeking a full-time Pro Bono Expungement and Reentry Coordinating Attorney for “Clearing the Path”, a new initiative designed to provide expungement assistance through a staff-supported, pro bono-driven model. The Attorney will serve as our centralized subject-matter expert for expungement services and will work with staff, volunteer attorneys, law schools, and community partners across our service area.

The Attorney will provide legal oversight, train and mentor volunteer attorneys, support law school partners, and maintain the overall quality of the “Clearing the Path” program. Periodic travel through our service area will be required. A demonstrated commitment to exceptional legal work and equal access to justice is required. Candidates should exhibit cultural awareness and empathy towards the communities we serve while embodying the mission and values of LAET with integrity and courage. This position may be based in Knoxville or Chattanooga.

Funding for this position is currently available for two years. Continuation beyond that period is contingent upon availability of additional grant funding.

Qualifications: Candidates must be admitted to the Tennessee Bar, a recent law graduate anticipating admission to the Tennessee Bar, or admitted to the bar of another state with the ability to waive into Tennessee.

Salary: Dependent upon experience, from $69,468 for newly admitted attorneys, higher for each year of experience thereafter. LAET offers a generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, retirement, and paid leave.
