MALS seeks dedicated and passionate Staff Attorney to join our Elder/Family Unit. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and advancing justice for underserved communities.Key Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality civil legal representation to low-income and elderly clients in our priority areas of consumer, elder, family, and housing law.
- Prepare estate planning documents for elderly clients.
- Conduct client interviews, case evaluations, and legal research.
- Draft pleading and conduct written discovery.
- Represent clients in hearings, depositions , trials, and other court proceedings.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations and stakeholders.
- Participate in outreach, education, and legal clinics.
- Comply with all grant conditions and reporting requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Tennessee or immediate eligibility for admission by reciprocity.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with clients from underrepresented backgrounds.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc.
- Previous legal aid or public interest law experience is preferred but not required.
