MALS seeks dedicated and passionate Staff Attorney to join our Elder/Family Unit. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and advancing justice for underserved communities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-quality civil legal representation to low-income and elderly clients in our priority areas of consumer, elder, family, and housing law.
  • Prepare estate planning documents for elderly clients.
  • Conduct client interviews, case evaluations, and legal research.
  • Draft pleading and conduct written discovery.
  • Represent clients in hearings, depositions , trials, and other court proceedings.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations and stakeholders.
  • Participate in outreach, education, and legal clinics.
  • Comply with all grant conditions and reporting requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Tennessee or immediate eligibility for admission by reciprocity.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with clients from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc.
  • Previous legal aid or public interest law experience is preferred but not required.
