Description:
We are a growing New Jersey law firm seeking an experienced Trusts & Estates Attorney to join the firm in an Of Counsel capacity. This is a flexible opportunity that can work particularly well for one of two types of attorneys:
- An experienced attorney who wants to scale back, work part-time, and maintain control over their schedule while continuing to handle quality legal work; or
- A motivated attorney who wants the opportunity to build and manage a substantial trusts and estates practice within an established firm.
For someone looking for a lighter schedule, the position offers the ability to focus primarily on practicing law without the administrative burdens and business-development pressures of operating a solo practice.
For someone who wants to grow, there is an opportunity to take on increasing responsibility and volume and develop a significant trusts and estates practice supported by the firm's existing pipeline, client relationships, infrastructure, technology, and administrative staff.
In either case, we are looking for an attorney who values flexibility and independence while remaining responsive, dependable, and committed to providing excellent client service.
Responsibilities:
- Independently handle estate planning matters, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, advance directives, and related documents.
- Handle probate and estate administration matters from inception through completion.
- Conduct client consultations and advise clients regarding estate planning and estate administration.
- Draft and review estate planning and administration documents.
- Communicate directly with clients, beneficiaries, fiduciaries, financial professionals, and other parties as needed.
- Manage deadlines and matters independently with minimal supervision.
- Attend in-person client meetings and document signings when necessary.
- Maintain timely client communication and accurate matter information using the firm's practice management systems.
- Work collaboratively with the firm's attorneys and administrative staff.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of substantive trusts and estates experience preferred.
- Active New Jersey law license in good standing.
- Strong knowledge of New Jersey estate planning, probate, and estate administration.
- Ability to independently manage matters from initial consultation through completion.
- Strong drafting, organizational, analytical, and client communication skills.
- Professional, responsive, dependable, and committed to providing a high level of client service.
- Comfortable using law firm technology and following established firm procedures and workflows.
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a larger firm.
- Of Counsel / Independent Contractor (1099)
- Part-time with substantial flexibility
- Ability to control your schedule and workload, subject to client needs and appropriate responsiveness
- Remote-friendly, with in-person availability required for certain client meetings and document signings
- Compensation based on collected revenue attributable to matters handled
- Consistent pipeline of estate planning and administration work provided by the firm
- Administrative support, technology, practice management systems, and established firm infrastructure provided
We are not necessarily looking for someone who wants another traditional full-time law firm position.
An experienced attorney who has reached a point in their career where they want fewer hours, greater flexibility, and less responsibility for running a practice can maintain an active trusts and estates practice while focusing primarily on client work.
At the same time, an attorney who wants to grow a practice will have the benefit of an existing and consistent flow of estate matters rather than having to spend years developing a client base from scratch. There is meaningful opportunity for the right person to take ownership of the firm's trusts and estates work and build it into a substantial practice over time.
The ideal candidate can work independently, take excellent care of clients, and treat the practice as their own while benefiting from the support and resources of an established firm.
