Description:
Position Summary:The Deputy Public Defender will provide competent and zealous representation to indigent clients charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses or facing mental health proceedings. This role requires strong courtroom advocacy, negotiation skills, and a commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Represent clients in court proceedings, including arraignments, probation, preliminary and pretrial hearings, trials, sentencing, appeals, mental health proceedings and related matters.
- Negotiate with prosecutors at all stages of a case to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
- Prepare, file, and argue motions on behalf of clients.
- Conduct thorough legal research; analyze and apply relevant statutes, case law, and legal principles.
- Communicate effectively with county attorneys, judges, probation officers, court staff, and others in furtherance of client representation.
- Maintain clear and timely communication with clients, ensuring they understand their rights, case status, and available options.
- Uphold professional and ethical standards in all aspects of legal practice.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- License to practice law in the State of Nebraska.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage a caseload, meet deadlines, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
