Job Description:
The Nebraska Attorney General's Office is currently seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorney General (“AAG”) in the Office's Civil Litigation Bureau.

The Nebraska Department of Justice is one of the strongest public interest law offices in the country, responsible for high-impact civil litigation at the cutting edge of state and federal law. Attorneys in our office do meaningful work, take on real responsibility for their own cases, and litigate matters that shape Nebraska's institutions, protect the public and the public fisc, and defend the rule of law.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced litigator to join a collaborative team and represent the State of Nebraska in both state and federal courts, with potential opportunities for appellate practice.

Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Nebraska, or clear ability to be licensed in Nebraska by motion.
  • Minimum of three years of litigation experience in a private law firm or government agency, which may include service as a judicial law clerk.
  • Litigation experience must include motions practice, depositions, and state or federal court hearings.
  • Excellent legal writing skills and strong professional judgment.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, initiative, and commitment to public service.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of general civil litigation and courtroom experience.
  • Employment law experience.
  • Significant courtroom experience and subject matter depth in at least two of the practice areas noted above.
  • Judicial clerkship experience.

Other:
  • Some travel required.
  • A criminal history and abuse background check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.
  • Salary commensurate with comparable state agency positions and candidate experience.

  • Serve as trial counsel for the State of Nebraska in civil litigation matters in state and federal district courts, with potential appellate involvement.
  • Handle complex litigation from initiation through resolution, including investigation, discovery, depositions, motions practice, hearings, and trial.
  • Draft persuasive pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda on significant legal and constitutional issues.
  • Provide strategic legal counsel to state agencies, officials, and employees on matters of statewide importance.
