The Assistant Town Attorney I or Assistant Town Attorney II will be responsible for handling a broad range of legal matters involving municipal law.
Assistant Town Attorney I:
Hiring salary range for Assistant Town Attorney I: $92,996.80 - $111,592.00
Full salary range for Assistant Town Attorney I: $92,996.80 – $130,228.80
This entry-level position under the Assistant Town Attorney classification is responsible for handling a broad range of legal matters involving municipal law, applying legal knowledge and skills to various municipal matters. Responsibilities may include assignments to advise and represent several different Town departments and divisions. Assignments are generally limited in scope and within an established procedural framework or directed by higher-level employees. Work generally carries entry levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy, and responsibility.

Full salary range for Assistant Town Attorney II: $102,918.40 - $143,166.40
This mid-level position under the Assistant Town Attorney classification is responsible for handling a broad range of legal matters involving municipal law, applying legal knowledge and skills to various municipal matters. Responsibilities may include assignments to advise and represent several different Town departments and divisions. Work in this class is distinguished from that of the Assistant Attorney I classification by the greater volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy, and responsibility attending the assignments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provides staff assistance to the Town on matters specified in the Town Charter, contracts, real property, state and federal constitutional law, zoning and land use, liquor licensing, taxation, open records, election law, municipal code interpretation and enforcement, and governmental liability and immunity.
- Provides legal advice to Town Council, boards and commissions, and Town departments.
- Works in partnership with other employees and departments of the Town to deliver effective and innovative services.
- Performs legal research and prepares, for review by Town Attorney, verbal and written legal opinions.
- Confers with staff, including supervisory, managerial, and administrative personnel as needed regarding Town wide and departmental policies and procedures.
- Advises applicable administrators or departments of potential problems or concerns and makes recommendations on changes or improvements.
- Provides verbal and written information to departments, including legal opinions.
- Drafts, reviews, and negotiates Town ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Responsible for effectively managing workload and ensuring that responsibilities comply with the Town Charter, Town Municipal Code, Town policies and procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Monitors cases that are handled by outside legal counsel.
- May attend evening meetings of Boards and Commissions to advise on legal matters, including adjudicative proceedings.
- Maintains confidentiality of information consistent with applicable Town policy, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- May be assigned to support designated areas of practice within the department requiring specialized expertise and knowledge, such as real estate, land use, public safety, water, municipal finance, employment, and contract law.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Juris Doctor from accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; safe driving record and a minimum of two (2) years of driving history
- Assistant Town Attorney I: Requires a Juris doctorate from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school supplemented by two (2) years' experience as a practicing attorney, with at least one (1) year experience in municipal law; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Assistant Town Attorney II: Requires a Juris doctorate from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school supplemented by five (5) years' experience as a practicing attorney, with at least two (2) years' experience in municipal law; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Preferred Experience: Experience in Contract Law or Property Law, or working with a Municipal Utility is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working familiarity with Colorado municipal law, state, federal and constitutional law.
- Ability to identify, analyze and interpret local, state and federal code and statutes.
- Ability to draft legal documents and write code that unambiguously reflects the intended content and purpose.

- Primarily on-site. The Town Attorney's Office may offer the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule. Hybrid work arrangements are subject to change based on business needs
