General Summary:
Sexual Assault or Human Trafficking Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys (APAs) are responsible for the vertical prosecution of all sexual assault cases committed on individuals aged 16 or older, which includes a focus on sexual assaults perpetrated with the use of a firearm. Firearms are also commonly used in Human Trafficking cases to intimidate and coerce victims into compliance. The APAs assigned to these Units will handle complex, difficult, and highly visible cases. Under supervision, they will conduct warrant reviews, make charging decisions, hold preliminary exams, file, and respond to motions, and conduct bench and jury trials. APAs must communicate effectively, professionally, and tactfully with victims, their families, other witnesses, law enforcement, court personnel and defense attorneys.

Qualifications: Juris Doctorate Degree; must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan; possess effective oral and written communication skills; highly organized and extremely motivated. Familiarity with Prosecutor by Karpel case management system and Training in Forensic Interview Protocols is preferred.

Typical Job Duties:
  • Conduct independent review and analysis of warrants and cases.
  • Prosecute complex, difficult and/or high visibility cases effectively and expeditiously.
  • In some instances, conduct investigative subpoenas.
  • Interact with and interview traumatized victims, witnesses, law enforcement agencies and defense counsels.
  • Provide zealous and effective advocacy on behalf of the People of the State of Michigan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
