Description of Major Job Duties:
The Labor, Employment & Work Comp (LEW) team of the Office of Corporation Counsel provides representation, attorney consultation, and other legal support to County Departments, employees and elected officials. The Assistant Corporation Counsel, as a member of the LEW team, will defend the County and its employees in various labor, employment and workers' compensation matters.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Defend labor and employment cases in all judicial and administrative bodies, including but not limited to federal and state court, EEOC, MDCR, MERC, Workers' Compensation Agency, Civil Service Commission, Unemployment Agency, Grievances and Arbitrations;
  • Handling jury and bench trials as well as appellate work in various courts and tribunals;
  • Attend and participate in various hearings, including motion practice;
  • Draft pleadings;
  • Draft all motions, with an emphasis on dispositive motions;
  • Conduct all phases of discovery process, including taking and defending depositions;
  • Conducting legal research and providing opinions to clients;
  • Consultations with Departments, primarily Personnel/Human Resources and Labor Relations;
  • Assist Labor Relations with collective bargaining issues and drafting of collective bargaining agreements;
  • Train Departments/employees on employment issues with an emphasis on sexual harassment, discrimination, FMLA and ADA;
  • Draft policies and procedures regarding employment issues;
  • Other work as assigned; currently this team assists with COVID-19 issues in the workplace.

Eligible Persons
At the time of application, eligible persons must have:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school; AND
  • Admission and maintenance of membership in good standing with the State of Michigan; AND
  • Minimum of five (5) years civil litigation and/or administrative experience
