Job Duties:
The Virginia Beach City Attorney's Office provides effective and efficient legal services, promotes accountability, trust and openness in government and focuses on outcomes that are fair, equitable and balanced while protecting the best interests of the client.

We are seeking an individual with an interest in and knowledge of Land Use, Zoning and Environmental Law. This position requires solid problem-solving and communications skills. The primary functions of the position include advising City departments (Housing, Planning and Agriculture), representing multiple boards and commissions, preparing written opinions based on legal research, representing the City in court on civil and criminal enforcement actions and administrative proceedings. Additional job functions include reviewing contracts and drafting ordinances and resolutions. Excellent writing ability, sharp analytical skills, and strong research abilities are essential. Experience in environmental regulatory, compliance, enforcement and transactional matters is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
Assistant City Attorney Minimums:
Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required for this position. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia.

Associate City Attorney Minimums:
Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Federal District Court is required for this position. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia.

Special Requirements:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
