Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a conscientious and creative attorney to join the City Attorney's Real Estate Section. Experience in commercial real estate transactions, or complex contacting matters would be a plus, but if you have solid problem-solving and communication skills, a positive attitude, and you pride yourself on your attention to detail, you should apply.

As an Attorney with the City you will build client relationships with people at all levels of government and will assist multiple City departments to achieve their real estate needs in Virginia's largest city. In addition, you will negotiate, interpret and draft leases, easements, franchises, agreements of sale, and other municipal real estate contracts; identify and resolve plat and title issues; handle real estate closings; advise the City Council, and City of Virginia Beach Development Authority on real estate, policy and public-private development matters; prepare City Council ordinances and resolutions; give presentations with maps and law; and research, write and advise on a variety of real estate matters.

Candidates must have active membership in good standing in the Virginia State Bar. Candidates with at least 5 years of relevant experience may qualify for Associate City Attorney.

The workday is typically Monday -Friday 8-5 (or 9-6), however the City Attorney's Office supports flexible work schedules and a healthy work-life balance for its valued employees. Residency in the City of Virginia Beach is not required.

This position will be filled as an Assistant City Attorney or Associate City Attorney, with compensation depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. The associated pay grade and range is as follows:
  • Assistant City Attorney: A17, $80,221.47 $124,343.28
  • Associate City Attorney: A21, $97,509.70 - $151,140.04

Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Federal District Court is required for this position. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia.

Special Requirements:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
