The Washington State Attorney General's Office's Discovery Division (DSD) has opportunities for an experienced attorney. The attorney in this position will act as discovery counsel to the Office and its Divisions, working with a dedicated team of experienced attorneys and paraprofessionals to identify and develop guidance, policies, and practices for the benefit of the AGO and its clients. As a member of a new division within the AGO, you will collaborate with attorneys and staff across the agency to make a meaningful, positive impact on the AGO's legal practice.
The DSD strives to make professional growth a priority and encourage staff to develop an expertise in areas of interest while still meeting the business needs of the section. AAGs will take on more responsibility and subject matter expertise as their careers progress, including training, leadership, and professional development opportunities. In addition, the DSD supports its staff members to maintain healthy work-life balance and offers flexible schedules with telework opportunities.
The division will adapt training, case assignment, and litigation or advice opportunities to the experience level of the successful candidate.
This full-time position can be located at any AGO location and may require travel to other AGO locations as necessary to collaborate with divisions, deliver training, or otherwise meet the essential functions of the position.
Duties:
The AAG in this position will advise, assist, and support other AGO divisions and AGO client agencies with discovery issues arising in affirmative and defensive litigation; develop discovery guidance, practices, training modules and resources to assist divisions and client agencies in addressing discovery challenges and new advances in technology; and provide divisions and client agencies risk management advice on records management and information governance practices. This AAG is supervised by a Managing Assistant Attorney General who reports to the Division Chief.
This Assistant Attorney General position will perform a variety of work, which may include:
- Developing and maintaining expertise and comprehensive knowledge in the field of discovery, records management, and information governance.
- Creating and refining policies, practices, resources, and trainings related to discovery based upon interpretations of relevant rules, regulations, case law and guidance.
- Providing consultation and support to AGO divisions and clients in the areas of discovery management, protocols, policies, practices, and trainings.
- Providing guidance and expertise to case teams in affirmative or defensive civil litigation by advising on legal and technical discovery issues before administrative entities and in state and federal courts.
- Collaborating with the DSD's other staff members to address complex legal and technical issues.
Qualifications:
In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the following qualifications are required for all attorneys:
- Litigation and discovery experience in a range of cases, from routine to complex;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Creative thinking and initiative;
- Ability and interest in collaborating on a variety of cases with different litigation teams and divisions;
- Experience in civil litigation;
- An ability to handle cases and projects electronically, including effectively using electronic case and project management tools;
- The ability to contribute positively to a team and interact successfully with interested groups and members of the public;
- The desire to participate in a growth-oriented culture that encourages learning and giving and receiving feedback;
- A commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards;
- A willingness to ask for and offer help in a supportive and collegial environment;
- An ability to identify and prioritize tasks, and meet short deadlines;
- A commitment to working in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment.
Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.)
