Description:
The RoleAs a Public Defender with Yakima County, you'll provide professional legal representation for clients in District Court or Superior Court (Adult, Juvenile, and/or ITA). No two days are the same — one day you might be negotiating a plea deal, and the next you're in the courtroom presenting a case to a jury.
You'll:
- Evaluate cases, investigate facts, and develop defense strategies.
- Represent clients at every stage: arraignments, motions, trials, sentencing, and appeals.
- Handle a mix of criminal and civil matters (including civil commitment, contempt, truancy, and at-risk youth).
- Work closely with supervisors and colleagues who believe in collaboration and mentorship.
Pay & Benefits
Annual Pay Range:
- Attorney I: $100,000 – $108,243 (Steps 1–5)
- Attorney II: $111,491 – $125,556 (Steps 1–7)
- Attorney I: $100,000 – $106,121 (Steps 1–4)
- Attorney II: $111,491 – $118,315 (Steps 1–4)

What We're Looking For
- Attorney I: Admission to the Washington State Bar. (If you've taken the bar and are awaiting results, we encourage you to apply!)
- Attorney II: Admission to the Washington State Bar plus at least 4 years of practice experience.

- Ability to pass a background investigation (including fingerprinting).
- Valid Washington State driver's license and proof of insurance at hire.
