The Appellate Division of the Department of Justice has one or more openings for an Assistant Attorney General. The candidate(s) selected may be placed in the Portland, Salem, or Eugene Legal office, depending on the needs of the division and the preferences of the successful applicant(s). This position has opportunity for a hybrid remote schedule.

The Appellate Division represents the State of Oregon in state and federal appellate courts in a wide variety of criminal, civil, and administrative cases. We are seeking candidates with exceptional writing skills and analytical ability who have a strong work ethic and work well with both attorneys and support staff. Candidates must be prepared to handle appeals across the full range of our work.

Required:
  • Active membership in the Oregon State Bar at the time of appointment.
  • Exceptional writing skills and analytical ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a heavy case load.
  • Willingness to work on all types of matters handled by the Appellate Division.

  • Strong work ethic.

Requested:
  • Experience as an appellate litigator or as an appellate judicial clerk.
  • Experience handling government-involved litigation including criminal, post-conviction, or juvenile dependency cases.
