A Non-Profit Organization is seeking an attorney with management experience and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law to join our team in Spring 2024 as Managing Attorney. Familiarity with special education law and/or criminal legal systems is desirable, but not required.

Position Description: The Managing Attorney will lead A Non-Profit Organization's Direct Representation program by providing in-person supervision to our legal team of attorneys. Our attorneys, including the Managing Attorney, provide special education legal representation to clients involved in juvenile and criminal proceedings. The Managing Attorney will report to the Deputy Director. Responsibilities include:
  • Manage the Direct Representation program, including coordinating the growth and development of
  • A Non-Profit Organization's direct legal services in alignment with A Non-Profit Organization's strategic plan.
  • Directly supervise attorneys and hold responsibility for all facets of supervision, including hiring,
  • training, mentoring, and providing formal, ongoing guidance and performance evaluation
  • Co-counsel cases with other members of the legal team, as needed
  • Maintain a substantial case load, depending on the needs of the organization
  • Partner with the legal team to identify trends that directly affect A Non-Profit Organization's clients and legal advocacy
  • and work with the Deputy Director to develop systemic solutions
  • Keep apprised of changes in the law and other issues affecting A Non-Profit Organization's client population and provide
  • internal trainings to the legal team
  • Supervise and conduct external legal trainings for young people, practitioners and stakeholders
  • Represent A Non-Profit Organization at coalition or other external meetings, as needed

Qualifications: Applicants should have demonstrated experience in public interest law. A Non-Profit Organization values building a diverse and inclusive team, and individuals with personal/lived experience with the legal systems and/or the communities A Non-Profit Organization serves are strongly encouraged to apply. Qualifications include:
  • Admission to the bar in a U.S. state and eligibility to apply for admission to the D.C. Bar
  • At least six years of experience providing direct legal services and carrying cases (at least two of
  • the total years must be in supervisory/management positions)
  • A strong desire to develop expertise in D.C.'s criminal legal system and special education law
  • The ability to work in a collaborative team model
  • Keen problem-solving skills, ability to troubleshoot, and creative and analytical thinking
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
