Located in the nation's capital, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The OAG enforces the laws of the District, defends, and provides legal advice to the District's government agencies and protects the interests of the District's residents. OAG is also charged with upholding the public interest. As a result, OAG supports a wide range of government and community interests. The Immediate Office sets the direction for the Office of the Attorney General, including the policy priorities that OAG pursues.
This Legal Fellow position is funded by the Progressive State Leaders Committee, Inc. (PSLC); the Legal Fellow will work exclusively under the direction of OAG, but will be employed by PSLC. The Legal Fellow will be located in the Immediate Office, Federal Initiatives Unit. We are seeking an experienced attorney to conduct legal research and analysis, advise, and litigate cases to protect the interests of the District and District residents and defend the rule of law.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include but are not limited to: analyzing complex factual and legal issues, monitoring federal legal and regulatory changes; collaborating with and advising District agencies, working with outside counsel, preparing matters for litigation, including preparing pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, appearing in court, and collaborating with other states in multi-state litigation.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school at the time of appointment. The successful candidate also must have at least three (3) years of civil litigation experience and excel in legal research and writing, oral advocacy, and fast-paced, emergency litigation. The ideal candidate will also have a creative orientation toward the law and the ability to propose innovative legal and non-legal strategies to protect the rights of the District and District residents and defend the rule of law.
Grade 13 equivalent: Candidates must have at least three years of relevant litigation experience and excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidates must possess excellent legal research and writing skills and strong interpersonal skills. Candidates must have experience handling a large volume of cases and possess the ability to work under pressure without sacrificing the quality of work. The successful candidate should be a self-starter with the ability to work with a high degree of independence.
Grade 14 equivalent: Candidates must have at least six years of relevant litigation experience and excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidates must possess excellent legal research and writing skills and strong interpersonal skills. Candidates must have experience handling a large volume of cases and possess the ability to work under pressure without sacrificing the quality of work. The successful candidate should be a self-starter with the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Licenses and Certifications:
The incumbent must be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or have the ability to waive in and be admitted within 360 days of appointment. If not currently a member of the District of the Columbia Bar, prior to their appointment, the successful candidate must send proof that his/her completed District of Columbia bar application has been submitted to the District of Columbia Bar.
Working Conditions/Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Generally, work is sedentary, some walking, handling, and carrying of light to moderately heavy objects (such as case records, briefcases, and exhibits) is required.

Salary Based on Available Funding for This Position. Pay Is Administratively Determined Based, in Part, on The Number of Years of Professional Attorney Experience.
