Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal services (advice, negotiation, litigation & administrative advocacy) to low-income mobilehome owners in both affirmative and defensive matters, including but not limited to:
  • Unlawful detainers
  • Investigation and representation in homeowner complaints against mobilehome park owners, including habitability and utility billing issues, interference with sale of mobilehomes, and discrimination complaints
  • Representation in civil suits against mobilehome parks related to violations of the Mobiehome Residence Law and Park breaches of lease agreements
  • Assist callers with mobilehome ownership matters via a multi-office legal advice hotline.
  • Represent mobilehome owners in unlawful detainer matters, including travel to court as needed.
  • Review/supervise the work product of Community Workers and Support Staff relating to all clients being advised or represented in mobilehome matters.
  • Develop leadership in working with the community, clients, and other advocacy groups related to mobilehome impact issues.
  • Participate in training, case reviews, staff meetings, and other A 501 Non-Profit Legal and Political Advocacy Group activities.
  • Prepare and provide community education regarding mobilehome owner legal rights.
  • Collaborate with members of the private bar as necessary.
  • Maintain contemporaneous time and client records in the case management system.
  • Maintain a great working relationship with all staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of CA, eligible for California's Provisionally Licensed Lawyer program, or eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Services Attorney, or admitted before the court of any state and willing to take the next CA bar.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Prior civil litigation experience is preferred.
  • Able to meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Good people skills, empathy, patience, and the ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population.
  • Bilingual fluency preferred but not required.

Experience - Entry Level

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor Degree
  • At least 6+ months' experience handling cases in civil litigation
  • A highly qualified and desirable candidate would also have the following:
  • Experience working with low-income families and communities.
  • Experience in a non-profit legal services environment.
  • Prior experience in legal services and additional language ability are relevant.
