Join an elite group of law professionals who provide a full range of legal services to the Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC). EEC is hiring a Staff Attorney I in the Office of Legal Services (OLS) located at 300 Blvd in Frankfort KY. The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet's Office of Legal Services protects human health and the environment by enforcing state and federal environmental laws such as the Clean Air Act, the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Water Act, and the Surface Mine Reclamation and Control Act. Through this combination of state and federally delegated authority, it works to ensure human health and the environment are protected while providing a regulatory framework for major and minor industries and government entities related to, among others, resource production and refinement, waste management, drinking water and waste water treatment, dam safety, and power generation.

This position will work under immediate supervision providing routine legal services which are typically characterized by facts that are well established, involve established legal precedents, and have a relatively moderate impact. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Handle various phases of litigation regarding environmental protection
  • Perform legal research, prepare briefs, and draft opinions
  • Prepare and argue cases
  • Provide representation in administrative, state, and federal courts
  • Assist in drafting legislation and administrative regulations

Special Requirements (Age, Licensure, Regulation, Etc.): Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.116 (supervised practice), or SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission). Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions - Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings. Travel is required.
