Summary: The Staff Attorney will join African Services Committee's (ASC) Legal Department to provide legal services to the immigrant community in the New York City area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Staff Attorney would manage a case docket and be responsible for complex cases before USCIS, the immigration court or other agencies, and housing court.
  • Provide direct legal services to clients in immigration law, as well as in housing and benefits.
  • Work directly with clients to prepare and file applications or legal submissions for immigration relief, and represent clients at agency interviews or court hearings as needed.
  • Oversee and maintain grant intake and screening process.
  • Conduct legal consultations with potential clients; review client screenings and analyze evidence/information to determine eligibility for relief and viability of cases for representation.
  • Supervise student interns or supporting staff working on tasks or assignments related to clients' cases. Review screenings conducted by supporting staff or student interns.
  • Identify and assess non-legal needs of clients and make referrals to ASC's internal programs or other partner agencies when appropriate.
  • Track referrals for enrolled clients.
  • Participate in Know Your Rights and other community facing events.
  • Maintain and update case files in the Legal Department's case management database. Work with the supervising attorney to compile relevant data and information to ensure monthly grant reporting requirements are met.
  • Represent ASC at meetings with other legal service agencies, government agencies, non-profit organizations.
  • Conduct client intake and enrollment for grant program.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications Education and/or experience required:

Experience supervising supporting staff, interns, or volunteers.
  • Juris Doctor.
  • Admission to the New York State bar preferred. Candidates who are pending admission to the New York bar will be considered.
  • One to three years of experience working in immigration law.
  • Candidates who also have experience representing clients before the Housing Court, or with benefits matters will be strongly considered.
  • Experience supervising supporting staff, interns, or volunteers.
  • Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:
  • Fluency in English and a 2nd language; French or Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and experience working with diverse individuals and low-income communities.
