In your role as Senior Product Counsel, you will be the day‑to‑day legal partner for cross-functional teams - from concept and design through launch, commercialization, and ongoing support. You will provide advanced, business‑focused legal guidance for Shure's conferencing and collaboration solutions, including related software, cloud/UCaaS, and connected devices.
In this key role, you will handle complex product, commercial, regulatory, and compliance matters; identify and assess legal risks related to new features, data use, AI‑enabled capabilities, and global deployment; and develop pragmatic strategies that enable innovation while protecting the company. You will also collaborate closely with cross‑functional stakeholders (including product, engineering, marketing, security, privacy, commercial, and operations teams) and may oversee outside counsel as well as informally mentor junior legal team members. Strong experience in product counseling, commercial transactions, intellectual property, privacy/data protection, and relevant technologies for conferencing and collaboration solutions is required.
This role is onsite with the option for hybrid (3 days in office per week) and based in our Niles, IL location.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as primary legal advisor to product and engineering teams for Shure's conferencing and collaboration solutions. Develop and communicate practical, risk‑based recommendations balancing innovation, user experience, and compliance.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams on product strategy and roadmaps, providing legal guidance from ideation through design, testing, launch, support, and end of life. Partner with product management, engineering, design, security, privacy, marketing, sales, and operations to embed compliance into product development and launches.
- Conduct legal product reviews, including analysis of key features, technologies, and data flows, and provide clear guidance to cross‑functional teams. Identify applicable legal, regulatory, and policy requirements—including privacy/data protection, consumer protection, AI/ML, communications and platform regulation, and product safety/liability—and assess their impact on product design and go‑to‑market plans.
- Coordinate with other members of the legal department on specific legal subject matters such as intellectual property, privacy, trade compliance, as well as global legal matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of technology and commercial agreements, including customer/channel contracts, technology licenses, data‑sharing agreements, vendor/SaaS arrangements, AI/ML‑related agreements, terms of use, product‑specific terms, service descriptions, acceptable‑use terms, and user documentation. Ensure that appropriate intellectual property, open source, data rights, privacy, and other product-related legal and compliance provisions are addressed.
- Manage and direct outside counsel to ensure high‑quality, business‑aligned, and cost‑effective external support.
- Collaborate with privacy and security teams on privacy notices, consent flows, and in‑product disclosures related to data collection, AI/ML features, analytics, and third‑party integrations.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory developments affecting conferencing and collaboration products, including global data‑protection laws, communications/UCaaS regulations, biometric/voice/image rules, and AI/ML‑related regulation.
- Identify legal, reputational, and safety risks across supported products and propose practical mitigation strategies, including design changes, documentation, contractual protections, and operational safeguards.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of legal frameworks, templates, playbooks, and best practices supporting product counseling across Shure's technology portfolio. Help shape internal policies, processes, and training related to product development, data use, AI/ML, and platform governance.
- Informally mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and legal team members, sharing subject‑matter expertise and supporting capability development within the department.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 years of legal practice experience with a strong focus on one or more of the following:
- Product counseling for technology, SaaS, cloud services, or IoT/connected devices
- Commercial technology transactions (e.g., customer, vendor, and licensing agreements)
- Privacy/data protection and consumer‑protection law
- Intellectual property (software and hardware)
- Prior in‑house experience is a plus, especially at a technology, SaaS, or hardware company.
- Meaningful experience advising product and engineering teams across the product lifecycle, ideally in conferencing/collaboration, UCaaS, cloud, software or IoT/hardware environments.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex and sensitive legal matters, provide practical and business‑aligned advice, and communicate clearly with non‑lawyers at all levels of the organization.
- Strong project‑management skills; ability to thrive working in fast‑paced, ambiguous environments with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
