Step into a high-impact role on Momentive's global legal team as a Senior Legal Counsel – Intellectual Property, where you'll help protect and advance the innovations that power our business. In this highly visible position, you'll partner closely with R&D, business leaders, and senior stakeholders to shape IP strategy, safeguard our technology, and unlock the full value of our intellectual property portfolio.

You'll lead across the full spectrum of IP matters and technology agreements, helping drive innovation while mitigating risk and ensuring compliance in a complex global environment. Please note that this role requires on-site presence five days per week, Monday through Friday and flexibility to support global calls.

Responsibilities include:
  • Independently lead the development and execution of IP strategy, aligning global portfolio management with business and innovation priorities.
  • Serve as the primary legal advisor on complex IP projects, proactively identifying risks and delivering strategic, business-oriented solutions.
  • Lead drafting, negotiation, and structuring of high-impact IP agreements, including licensing, joint development, and strategic partnerships.
  • Direct and oversee patent filing strategy, oppositions, and enforcement actions to optimize IP asset value worldwide.
  • Provide advanced IP support for major corporate transactions (M&A, divestitures), including leadership on due diligence and integration planning.
  • Monitor global IP law trends and lead implementation of proactive strategies to maintain competitive advantage.
  • Influence and advise senior management and technical leaders on critical IP decisions; serve as a mentor to junior IP team members.
  • Drive continuous improvement of IP processes, tools, and governance as part of global legal initiatives.
  • Travel up to 20%

Qualifications:
The following are required for the role
  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from accredited law school; admitted to practice in New York or ability to register as in-house counsel in New York
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, engineering, materials science, or closely related field or relevant work experience in a closely related field
  • Experience: 10+ years of overall patent legal experience, preferably in both multinational corporate and law firm settings
  • Registered to practice at the US Patent and Trademark Office

Skills:
  • Demonstrated expertise in the preparation and prosecution of global patent applications in the chemical arts
  • Considerable experience drafting and negotiating technology/IP-related agreements, including confidentiality, license, and joint development agreements
  • Knowledge of IP law in foreign jurisdictions, including Europe and Asia-Pacific regions
  • Proven ability to proactively spot issues, drive and lead complex projects and influence senior stakeholders, providing strategic yet practical and business-oriented advice
  • Ability to work independently and manage conflicting deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Strong commitment to integrity professionalism, and passion for excellence

The following are preferred skills for the role:
  • Masters or PHD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or closely related field
  • Experience related to IP enforcement and litigation
  • Previous experience working in the Chemical industry
