What You'll Contribute:
We are seeking an experienced, business-savvy Consumer Lending Attorney to join our legal team. This individual will serve as regulatory counsel and strategic advisor for our private student loan business and support all facets of marketing, origination, and underwriting. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert in consumer financial laws and regulations, including the CAN-SPAM Act, Truth in Lending Act and Regulation Z, Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Regulation B, Bank Secrecy Act, state and federal UDAAP laws, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Telephone Consumer Protection Act, among others. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams on the design and implementation of innovative new products and services and closely monitor newly enacted legislation and regulatory developments to assess their impact on the organization.

What You'll Do:
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide legal guidance on the design and development of new products, features, services, and potential partnerships.
  • Support digital advertising initiatives and campaigns and evaluate marketing/advertising collateral to ensure it complies with applicable law.
  • Analyze and interpret newly enacted laws and regulations, advise key stakeholders of potential impacts, and implement solutions as necessary.
  • Review policies and procedures, customer communications, and other disclosures.
  • Review and coordinate responses to consumer complaints and inquiries from regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders.

What You Need to Succeed:

What You Have:
Minimum education, skills and experience required.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and current license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 10+ years of legal experience in private practice or in an in-house corporate legal department, with a focus on the marketing and origination of consumer financial products and services.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience applying banking and consumer regulatory laws and regulations including CAN-SPAM, TILA/Regulation Z, ECOA/Regulation B, BSA/AML, FCRA, TCPA, and federal and state UDAAP laws.
  • Proven track record of providing strategic legal advice and guidance on consumer lending issues to senior management and key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and apply legal requirements in a practical business context.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in cross-functional group setting, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Superior business acumen, influential with sound judgment.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment (3 days per week in the office).
