Description:
Position Overview:As we enter our next stage of growth, we are seeking a practical, business-minded attorney to join our legal team as Counsel or Senior Counsel, depending on experience.
This is not a narrow specialty role. As a key member of a lean legal team, this attorney will independently own significant matters across government and commercial contracting, corporate and financing matters, compliance, and business operations. The role offers the opportunity to influence decisions early, build scalable legal processes, and help shape the legal function as the company grows.
Location: Washington, D.C. area – This is a hybrid role with regular in-person collaboration expected.
Responsibilities:
- Advise business leaders and cross-functional teams on commercial, corporate, regulatory, employment, and operational matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate customer, vendor, partnership, licensing, services, confidentiality, and other commercial agreements.
- Support the full lifecycle of government opportunities and acquisition vehicles, including capture and proposals, solicitation review, prime contracts, subcontracts, teaming arrangements, performance issues, modifications, claims, and disputes.
- Support export controls, trade compliance, CUI and cybersecurity requirements, ethics and compliance, industrial security, investigations, and related regulatory matters.
- Assist with corporate governance, financing and investor diligence, board matters, intellectual property, real estate, insurance, employment, and strategic transactions.
- Partner with sales, contracts, finance, engineering, product, supply chain, security, HR, and program teams to identify issues early and develop practical, decision-ready solutions.
- Create templates, playbooks, policies, training, and processes that improve consistency, responsiveness, and speed as the company scales.
- Manage outside counsel efficiently when specialized support is needed.
- Contribute wherever the legal needs of the business are greatest.
What We're Looking For:
The strongest candidate will be practical, intellectually curious, adaptable, and comfortable working where the answer is not always obvious. This person should be able to distinguish material legal and business risks from issues that can be managed pragmatically and know when to act independently, seek input, or escalate.
Success will require sound judgment, flexibility, and the ability to build a close, collaborative partnership with the General Counsel and colleagues across the business. This role is well suited for a team-oriented attorney who is comfortable taking ownership, working outside rigid subject-matter lanes, and moving fluidly between strategic initiatives and immediate business needs.
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 6+years of relevant legal experience at a law firm, in-house legal department, growth-stage company, or a combination of these environments.
