Thomson Reuters is seeking a Senior Counsel, Engineering & Technology to join our General Counsel's Office. In this role, you will support Thomson Reuters' Engineering and Technology organization, including our Innovation Labs, by advising on legal, regulatory, and reputational risks across the technology development lifecycle, including software engineering, platform architecture, emerging technology research, technology partnerships, and emerging areas of law. This position may be based in our U.S. offices in Minneapolis or Dallas, or in our Canadian office in Toronto.About the role:
In this opportunity as a Senior Counsel, Engineering & Technology, you will:
- Advise engineering and technology partners on legal issues arising across the technology development lifecycle, from concept through deployment, for new platforms, systems, and technical capabilities across Thomson Reuters' products and services.
- Identify and manage risk: Assess legal, regulatory, and reputational risks associated with software development, data usage, and emerging technologies, and provide practical, business-oriented guidance that supports informed engineering decision-making.
- Support innovation and research initiatives: Advise the Innovation Labs on the legal implications of research projects, proofs of concept, and emerging technology pilots, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other frontier technologies.
- Advance compliance best practices: Develop and implement regulatory compliance best practices, particularly in artificial intelligence, data privacy and security, open source software usage, intellectual property, and related laws and regulations.
- Enable strategic initiatives: Provide legal support for technology partnerships, vendor and licensing arrangements, integrations, strategic alliances, and co-development arrangements with technology providers and research institutions.
- Build scalable legal resources: Create, update, and deliver training materials, playbooks, templates, and other legal resources for engineering, technology, and Innovation Labs partners.
About You:
You're a fit for the role of Senior Counsel, Engineering & Technology if your background includes:
- Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice, or eligibility to practice, in Minnesota, Texas, or Ontario; active license in good standing.
- 4+ years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department advising on technology transactions, software licensing, data privacy, intellectual property, or related matters.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence regulation, data privacy and cybersecurity laws, open-source software licensing, and intellectual property law.
- Ability to serve as a trusted, collaborative partner to Engineering, Technology, and Innovation Labs teams, helping balance legal risk with business objectives and the long-term interests of Thomson Reuters.
- Strong process orientation, with the ability to build, improve, and scale internal processes, documentation, and systems.
- Sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, initiative, and creativity in solving complex legal and business problems.
- Ability to work effectively and inclusively as part of a diverse, cross-functional team.
- Experience with technical disciplines, software engineering or computer science is a plus.
- Registered U.S. Patent Attorney is a plus.
