The Opportunity:This role is on a hybrid schedule in our Detroit office, in office weekly with some remote days.
The Senior Counsel for Employment Law will provide legal advice and support on employment-related matters to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws. This role involves advising on a wide range of employment issues, including but not limited to employee relations, labor law, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour compliance, and workplace policies. The Senior Counsel will work closely with HR and other departments to mitigate legal risks and support the organization's strategic goals.
The Work Itself
- Legal Advice and Counsel:
- Provide expert legal advice on employment law issues, including hiring, termination, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour laws, and employee benefits.
- Counsel HR and management on best practices and legal requirements to ensure compliance and reduce legal risks.
- Policy Development and Implementation:
- Assist in the development, review, and implementation of employment policies and procedures.
- Ensure policies are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Litigation and Dispute Resolution:
- Manage and oversee employment-related litigation and administrative proceedings.
- Represent the organization in negotiations, mediations, and settlements of employment disputes.
- Training and Education:
- Develop and conduct training programs for HR and management on employment law topics.
- Keep the organization informed of changes in employment laws and regulations.
- Documentation and Contracts:
- Draft, review, and negotiate employment contracts, severance agreements, and other employment-related documents.
- Ensure all employment agreements are legally sound and protect the organization's interests.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Conduct internal audits and investigations related to employment practices.
- Develop strategies to mitigate legal risks and ensure compliance with employment laws.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and strong academic record.
- Admission to the state bar and in good standing.
- 5+ years of legal experience , preferably in employment law in a corporate legal department or law firm.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with HR and other departments.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in managing employment litigation and dispute resolution.
- Background in labor relations and collective bargaining.
- Familiarity with Canadian employment laws.
