The Senior Corporate Counsel for Regulatory Compliance will support the organization in a broad range of regulatory matters. The successful Candidate will play a pivotal role in overseeing and optimizing DENSO's North America regulatory compliance program. This position involves developing and implementing strategies to ensure compliance with non-product specific regulations with a primary focus on regulations applicable to the automative industry specifically like FMVSS and NHTSA; and generally, like UFLPA, Connected Vehicle Rule, as well as Safety and Environment. The ideal Candidate will have a strong background working across multiple business groups and engineering groups to define strategies that help ensure compliance and deliver solutions to complex business issues. It would be advantageous for the Candidate to have working level knowledge of trade compliance, including export regulations, and familiarity with Government contracting. The Candidate will work directly with members of the legal team, purchasing, sales, engineering, and business executive to proactively identify solutions that address and manage regulatory risk. The Candidate must have excellent judgment, have courage to make difficult decisions, and be able to influence peers and executives on strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee, lead, coordinate, and support compliance with U.S. non-product specific regulatory requirements applicable to a major Tier-1 automotive supplier with significant manufacturing operations in North America. Ensure the establishment, continuous improvement and maintenance of policies, procedures, and controls to manage automotive, environmental, safety, and supply chain compliance risks and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and present reports to executive leadership on trade and regulatory compliance issues, performance metrics, and strategic initiatives.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop regulatory compliance strategies considering different regulatory pathways.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to identify potential compliance issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide regulatory training to internal teams on relevant regulations and compliance procedures
  • Travel to regional locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Required Skills:
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Practical, working level, knowledge and understanding of navigating complex regulations and working with applicable regulatory agencies and stakeholders to develop compliance strategies. Deep knowledge and experience with BIS regulations covering Connected Vehicles, UFLPA and Exports is strongly preferred. Familiarity with the operation and management of other relevant regulations and guidelines in the auto industry including NHTSA, OSHA, and EPA is advantageous.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret complex regulations and apply those regulations to business needs.
  • Strong Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple regulatory projects with tight deadlines and prioritize tasks.
  • Compliance Program: Familiarity with the operation and management of corporate compliance function.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school required. Admitted to a US state bar in good standing.
  • Strong academic background.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years working as licensed attorney required.
  • Extensive experience advising clients in regulatory matters required

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Significant experience providing advice and counsel to leaders on how to mitigate risk in fast paced environment preferred.
  • Experience working in the automotive industry preferred.
  • Significant corporate legal in-house experience preferred.
  • Significant experience working in or for a Japanese company preferred.
