Role Overview:
The Senior Attorney will oversee the Health Care team. Objectives of the job include, but are not limited to, (1) provide legal representation to individuals with disabilities primarily in administrative law settings, and in matters involving access to health care services; (2) overseeing attorney, paralegal, and advocate work on health care matters; and (3) participating in agency strategy involving health care issues.

A day in the life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Oversees the Health Care team with a primary focus on cases involving Medicaid waiver and prior authorization, Home, and Community Based Services (HCBS), Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (disability discrimination, reasonable accommodations/modifications, effective communication, and physical accessibility), and other relevant rights enforcement. The Health Care team will also involve other health care-related systemic projects and work.
  • Provides legal representation to individuals with disabilities primarily in administrative law settings, and in matters involving access to health care services.
  • Coordinates with Executive Director, Legal Director, and Policy Director regarding potential media advocacy, press releases, or other potentially high-profile health care cases that might generate media attention.
  • Stays abreast of national developments impacting health care topics.
  • Participates in weekly case assignment meeting.
  • Gives presentations and other community outreach efforts, as assigned.
  • Actively participates on boards and committees of community partners, as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:
The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have
  • Must be admitted to the Indiana State Bar in good standing.
  • Must be able to interpret and apply laws, statutes, and administrative and court decisions.
  • Must be able to review and draft proposed statutes and rules.
  • Must be able to prepare legal documents that are clear, logical and well-organized.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of the computerized legal research service (Westlaw).
  • Must have thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, rules, guidelines, and standards pertinent to agency programs.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the legal requirements pertaining to Administrative and Judicial Review procedures.
  • Must have specialized knowledge of federal and state disability law.
  • Must have administrative law experience.
