After starting their careers at an international law firm, Shannon and Allison wanted something different. So, fifteen years ago, they created their dream law firm. Hutcheson Bowers has three practice areas: defense of fintech companies in consumer disputes, eminent domain, and defense-side employment law.The firm has an opening for a full-time Senior Associate Attorney. This position will float between the firm's eminent domain and consumer fintech practice areas. At its heart, this position requires effective dispute resolution skills, deployed in two different practice areas. The position is remote, but travel, mostly within Texas, is required. Right now, base salary is set based on a 1200 minimum billable hour annual requirement as well as experience. Bonuses are generally available as the associate bills more than the minimum requirement and performs quality work. The firm's full-time associates typically bill well over 1200 hours.
The ideal candidate is a team player, works diligently and independently, is detail oriented, and appreciates the collaborative culture at the firm. There is reasonable flexibility in the work schedule to attend to personal and community commitments when an associate demonstrates they can balance this flexibility with the needs of the firm and its clients.
In the fintech practice area, there is an immediate need for a lead lawyer to handle some larger arbitration matters through discovery to final hearing and/or to manage a growing docket of consumer disputes. This is an opportunity to work directly with successful fintech companies across the country and develop legal arguments and overall strategies on cutting edge legal topics relating to emerging financial products. The associate will be expected to independently handle written discovery, depositions, and final merits hearings, mostly in the arbitration context; to effectively and independently communicate directly with clients, and to manage dockets of multiple consumer disputes (25+) with the help of AI, junior associates, and paralegals.
In the eminent domain practice area, the associate will work directly with Sue Ayers, who heads the firm's eminent domain practice. The exponential growth in population and infrastructure in Texas has created significant demand for eminent domain attorneys. The firm's practice is heavily weighted toward representing condemnors (railroad, water and waste water pipelines, conservation districts, etc.). However, the firm selectively accepts the representation of landowners, for example against TxDot and the federal government. Eminent domain cases frequently go to hearings that are mini trials, with argument, live fact and expert witnesses, and same-day awards. After training under Sue, the associate will be expected to independently handle these matters. The ability to travel throughout Texas - to wherever the land is located and the hearings are held - is a requirement.
All candidates must be licensed in Texas, reside in Texas, and have at least five years' experience in litigation, arbitration, or other administrative dispute resolution. The ideal candidate should have banking/finance, consumer law, arbitration, or eminent domain experience. However, if you have general litigation/arbitration experience and are otherwise a fit, we can train you on the substantive areas of law.
