Chesterfield County, Virginia, a nationally-recognized and award-winning local government, is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant or Senior Assistant County Attorney with a strong academic background, substantial experience in matters that relate to the Department of Social Services, and excellent research and writing skills. This attorney will provide daily legal counsel to county officials and employees and will represent the county and its officials and employees in litigation before courts and administrative tribunals, both as part of litigation teams and individually. The attorney will perform other work as required, which may include building, fire, and environmental code enforcement. Candidates must be licensed members of the Virginia State Bar in good standing and should have a minimum of five years of relevant experience. A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required at the time of application. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the political and administrative environment in which local governments operate and the ability to advocate legal solutions with moral authority. Since candidates will be judged, in significant part, by the quality of their legal writing, candidates must provide writing samples to the County Attorney's Office at the time of applying. Candidates will also be judged by references who are familiar with their character and professional achievements. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification are required.
Duties:
Provide legal counsel to county departments, officials, and employees; be responsible for a variety of complex legal matters and transactions relating to social services and other matters; and represent the County and its officials and employees in litigation, often as part of litigation teams. Perform other work as required.
