Miller Canfield's Energy, Environmental, and Resources Group is seeking a senior attorney with 10+ years of experience to join its Michigan‑based regulatory practice. This role is designed for an attorney with deep experience in state energy regulation, including utility and regulatory commission matters, who is comfortable leading complex proceedings and advising sophisticated clients on high‑stakes regulatory issues.The attorney in this position will focus primarily on Michigan and state‑level energy and regulatory matters, including:
- Representing utilities, energy companies, and other regulated entities before the Michigan Public Service Commission and other state regulatory agencies
- Leading regulatory matters such as rate cases, cost recovery filings, tariff filings and amendments, rider proceedings, and integrated resource plans
- Advising clients on regulatory compliance, transaction approvals, cost allocation issues, and related regulatory strategy
- Drafting and managing regulatory filings, including petitions, applications, comments, testimony, briefs, discovery, and responses to discovery
- Conducting and participating in hearings, including examination and cross‑examination of witnesses
- Participating in settlement conferences and negotiating complex, multi‑party regulatory settlement
- This role involves significant responsibility, direct client engagement, and the opportunity to lead matters from strategy through resolution.
Qualifications:
- 10 or more years of experience in energy, utility, and/or environmental regulatory law
- Substantial experience appearing before state public utility commissions, particularly the Michigan Public Service Commission
- Experience with rate cases, cost recovery, tariffs, resource planning, or related utility regulatory matters
- Familiarity with FERC proceedings is a plus but not required
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex regulatory proceedings with minimal oversight
- Strong writing, advocacy, and client‑counseling skills
- Admission to practice in Michigan, or eligibility for prompt admission
- Candidates must be based in Michigan
