Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours/week (Daytime)
Salary: $121,694 – $131,694 (2026 Management/Confidential)
About the role:
Tioga County is seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Defender to lead and manage the Public Defender's Office. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for ensuring quality legal representation for indigent individuals in criminal and qualifying civil matters.
Serves at the pleasure of the Tioga County Legislature. Designated as an appointive officer under County Law 716 and Public Officers Law 3.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the Public Defender's Office, including staff supervision and budget preparation.
- Assign attorneys and determine eligibility for indigent defense services.
- Represent clients at all stages of legal proceedings—negotiations, trial prep, courtroom appearances, and appeals.
- Initiate legal actions to protect client rights and pursue appeals when warranted.
- Coordinate expert services and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Qualifications: Must be licensed to practice law in New York State.
