Overview:
We are seeking a Pro Bono Immigration Counsel to lead and support the firm's pro bono immigration practice. Working closely with the Director of Pro Bono & Community Service, the Pro Bono Immigration Counsel serves as the firm's primary humanitarian immigration subject matter expert, supporting volunteer attorneys and paralegals through training, mentorship, and case consultation; fostering relationships with community partners and referral organizations; and helping develop and administer a high-impact immigration pro bono program that expands access to justice for immigrant clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruit, retain, and support Fredrikson volunteer attorneys and paralegals through mentorship and individualized guidance.
- Evaluate proposed immigration pro bono matters and recommend cases for acceptance based on legal, ethical, and resource considerations.
- Mentor volunteer attorneys throughout each matter, including case strategy, legal research, document review, and procedural guidance.
- Develop and deliver immigration law trainings, CLE programs, practice guides, templates, checklists, and related resources.
- Partner with the Director of Pro Bono & Community Service to maintain a strong, innovative pro bono immigration program.
- Identify emerging community needs and recommend initiatives, partnerships, and program improvements that increase participation and client impact.
- Maintain matter records and track case activity, program metrics, and outcomes through the firm's case management systems.
- Monitor immigration law, policy, agency practice, and litigation developments and communicate relevant updates to volunteers.
- Maintain immigration pro bono resources and promote consistent, high-quality representation.
- Manage relationships with legal aid, nonprofit, bar, and community partners, including coordinating case placement, staffing, training, client-service needs, and collaborative initiatives.
Our Ideal Candidates Will Have:
- Minimum of 5 years of immigration law experience, including experience with humanitarian immigration matters.
- Demonstrated experience handling immigration matters from intake through resolution.
- Strong legal research, writing, advocacy, and client counseling skills.
- Experience mentoring, supervising, or training attorneys or legal staff.
- Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters and priorities simultaneously.
- J.D. from an ABA-Accredited Law School.
- Active attorney license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with asylum, SIJS, TPS, naturalization, humanitarian parole, U visas, T visas, removal defense, or related humanitarian immigration matters.
- Experience working with pro bono programs, legal services organizations, or nonprofit legal providers.
- Active involvement in AILA or other immigration-related professional organizations.
- Experience developing legal training materials and practice resources.
- Spanish language proficiency or proficiency in another language commonly spoken by immigrant communities.
