Description:

Intellectual Strategies is a unique type of law firm. We offer a "Fractional Legal Team" for startup/scaleup SaaS, ecommerce, and technology companies. Our clients hire us on a retainer basis to effectively be their in-house legal team, although on a fractional budget as they scale and grow.

We have deep expertise in IP, so we work with lots of innovative clients who need protection for their inventions. We are looking for a registered patent attorney with patent prep/prosecution experience. You must have at patent prep/pros skills to be considered. We do not provide entry-level training.

Many of our clients are earlier-stage companies with small, focused patent portfolios rather than large IP estates, so comfort and efficiency working with small clients and small portfolios is essential. You should be able to manage a matter from initial invention disclosure through issuance on your own (although with the support of a very experienced patent admin), without needing it handed to you piece by piece.

We are growing our team and are specifically looking for an experienced patent attorney we can turn to regularly for our clients' needs. As an attorney in this role, you would be available for overflow work that varies in scope and complexity depending on our clients' needs. You would be a 1099 contractor providing services to our law firm, on behalf of our clients. The hours available for any attorney within our network can vary greatly, from a good amount of work on a project to very little work for extended periods of time, with the expectation of growing the workload and team participation over time.

This position is ideal for an experienced attorney who is currently looking for flexibility with a light amount of overflow work at overflow rates, similar to the hourly payroll compensation rates you might experience as an attorney in a boutique law firm.

If you would like to be considered for this patent attorney role that our Fractional Legal Team attorneys turn to for assistance with overflow projects, with the potential to possibly grow into a more comprehensive role within our Fractional Legal Team, then please submit your information.

Please submit a cover letter that clearly indicates:
  • Your patent preparation/prosecution experience, including your technical area(s) of expertise
  • Whether you are able to produce your own patent drawings, or whether you would require a patent draftsperson to prepare drawings for your applications
  • A brief explanation of how you are efficient and client-oriented in your approach to practicing law
  • We are only looking for attorneys with patent expertise in mechanical, electrical, or software technical areas, matching our existing clients and target market.

We will evaluate candidates on typical qualifications of competent and client-oriented attorneys. Our startup/scaleup clients and our internal team are not willing to tolerate inefficient, overcomplicated, obstructive, or verbose attorney practices.
