Description:

A Full Service Intellectual Property Law Firm is looking for a contract Patent Agent, who will, under the guidance of the patent attorneys, draft detailed descriptions of inventions, which form the basis of patent applications. This is a great opportunity for a CS engineer seeking to transition to patent agent career. The ideal candidate is either registered with the Patent Bar or has several years of experience drafting patent applications as a technical writer.

About the role:
Patent Agents describe the technical aspects of an invention. When drafting a patent application, they are required to study the technology and communicate the invention to the USPTO. Under the guidance of a patent attorney, they will translate from flow charts, diagrams, and inventor descriptions the purpose and capabilities of the underlying technological solution. Candidates must have the required technical background (computer science). Although we prefer candidates who are registered with the patent bar with significant experience in patent drafting, we are willing to develop more junior patent agents. This would also be a good growth opportunity for strong technical writers with a BS in CS wishing to make a career transition to becoming a patent agent.

Responsibilities:
  • Drafting technical descriptions and corresponding figures for patent applications in the field of computer science (specifically, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, systems architecture).
  • Working under the guidance of patent attorneys, review client invention disclosures, invention disclosure meeting recordings, prior art references, and other product/technical data to describe the invention using clear, precise technical writing.
  • Working under the guidance of patent attorneys, ensure that the technical writing is expressed and formatted within the writing conventions and requirements specified by the USPTO.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • BS in Computer Science required
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects in parallel, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with patent attorneys about work status and timelines.
  • Candidates must be residents of the U.S. and authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring work visa sponsorship.

Preferred:
  • Academic or industry experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and systems architecture is desirable.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in technical and/or scientific writing, with samples available for review. A writing assessment may be assigned during the interview process.
