Who You Are and What You'll Do:
You are passionate about life sciences and making a difference to cancer patients, their families, and healthcare providers. The Patent Agent/Patent Counsel will be a key role on the intellectual property team and will provide legal and IP support to the research and development groups. You will be responsible for developing and executing short and long-term patent strategies, establishing and maintaining business relationships with scientific and development teams, and managing patent portfolios key to A Different Kind of Clinical-Stage Biopharmaceutical Company's business objectives.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Identify and protect IP assets to support corporate strategy
    • Patent Portfolio Management:
      • Work with research, development, and clinical teams to identify and protect new inventions
      • Draft, file and prosecute patent applications in a timely manner in the U.S. and world-wide
      • Develop and implement patent life cycle management strategies
      • Conduct patentability and inventorship analyses
  • Assist with IP diligence for internal and external opportunities
  • Understand and deftly communicate IP risk assessments
  • Interface with inventors on a variety of IP and legal matters
  • Understand the competitive IP landscape and develop strategies to mitigate risks for A Different Kind of Clinical-Stage Biopharmaceutical Company
    • Conduct (or if patent agent, support) freedom to operate, infringement, and invalidity analyses
  • Collaborate on Publication Review processes

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Patent Agent - Advanced degree in the biological or chemical sciences; registered and in good standing to practice before the USPTO
  • Patent Counsel – Advanced degree or Bachelor's degree with additional significant work experience in the biological or chemical sciences; active member in good standing or Registered In-House Counsel (RIHC) of the State Bar of California (or willingness to register) and registered and in good standing to practice before the USPTO
  • 5 years recent, hands-on patent prosecution experience (law firm / in-house) in the biotechnology or chemical arts.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10 years or more recent, hands-on experience in world-wide patent preparation and prosecution in both biotechnology and chemical arts, including antibodies, antibody drug conjugates, formulations, manufacturing, analytical assays, and related areas.
  • Experience with freedom to operate and competitive landscape analysis is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with biological drug development process a plus
  • Excellent leadership and influencing skills
