General Summary:
This position will be primarily focused on conducting internal Open Source software reviews, and finding ways to enable Business Units to effectively utilize open source software while also maintaining license compliance and mitigating intellectual property risks.

The successful candidate will work closely with software developers to understand how internally developed software will be integrated with Open Source software. They will analyze Open Source license agreements and investigate risks to A Multinational Semiconductor and Telecommunications Equipment Company's intellectual property rights associated with using Open Source software.

The successful candidate will provide counseling on sophisticated issues regarding Open Source compliance to senior executives, Business Unit engineers and legal staff. Candidates will also have an advocacy role in working with external organizations including open source, standards, policy workshops, and trade associations, to provide input and occasionally lead discussions to explain the intellectual property implications in the policy context as they relate to open source. This role will have significant cross-over with adjacent practices within the group including AI legal matters related to model usage/deployment, training dataset license compliance, and regulatory compliance. Experience and creativity in negotiations, comfort in public speaking and a willingness to engage within the open source community are additional positive considerations.

Candidates must be able to address a series of practical legal counseling, complex license analysis, and technical scenarios in the area of Open Source and related topics to be given during the interview process.

A candidate's ability to communicate effectively with company executives, technical professionals, and legal professionals is essential.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate degree or international equivalent.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience as counsel at a law firm or in-house.
  • Active bar license to practice law in the state or jurisdiction where the employee will be practicing (or ability to obtain upon hiring).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years in practice with relevant experience
  • 7+ years experience as counsel at a law firm or in-house with a focus on technology licensing, intellectual property, inclusive of software and open source-related areas of practice
  • 4+ years experience handling open source issues either in the capacity of a lead open source attorney or in an adjacent area such as intellectual property or technology transactions, in each latter case with exposure to open source licensing issues in both breadth and depth
  • Ability to appropriately address a series of complex practical scenarios in the area of open source legal issues to be given during the interview process
  • Knowledge of software programming fundamentals

Education:
  • Required: Juris Doctorate degree, other applicable degree, or international equivalent.
  • Preferred: Bachelors degree in an engineering field, with significant exposure to computer science-related course work
