What to ExpectTesla is seeking an experienced Litigation Attorney to join the Product Liability team within our dynamic Legal Department. The Managing Counsel will represent and defend Tesla in all facets of product liability-related litigation matters, primarily focused on vehicle products. This role involves close collaboration with internal legal teams, engineering departments, and external counsel to develop defense strategies and manage complex legal challenges in a fast-paced environment.
What You'll Do:
- Represent and defend Tesla in all aspects of product liability-related litigation matters
- Engage in factual investigation, analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive legal research, and independently develop, recommend, and present defense strategies within the legal team and to the business
- Respond to complaints and pleadings, handle discovery requests, conduct custodial interviews, manage document collection and review, prepare responses to motions, and represent Tesla at hearings, mediations, trials, and arbitrations
- Prepare witnesses for deposition and trial, and negotiate for the dismissal or resolution of cases at all stages of litigation
- Analyze vehicle data, collaborate with engineering teams to interpret findings, and respond to attorney demand letters with summaries to mitigate litigation risks
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging laws, regulations, and trends related to vehicle regulations and product liability
- Work closely with regulatory counsel on investigations, collaborate with engineering teams to identify improvement areas, and provide counsel on complex questions balancing risk and product development
- Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school
- Member of a state bar
- 12+ years of experience actively litigating personal injury and product liability matters, including case assessment, strategy development, discovery responses, motion drafting, mediation, arbitration, and court trials
- Experience in preparing company witnesses for depositions or other hearings
- Ability to exercise business and legal judgment with strong problem-solving, research, and project management skills, and capability to collaborate with business teams including engineers and non-lawyers
- Clear and concise communication style, both in writing and verbally
- Proven track record of working efficiently with a client-service focus in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
