Based in Los Angeles, BD&J is California's leading personal injury law firm, having recovered over $2 billion for our clients. We are currently seeking a Managing Attorney to join our team and lead our Disengagements Department. This role is ideal for an attorney with strong organizational skills, an eye for risk mitigation, and experience navigating client transitions within a personal injury practice.The Disengagements Attorney will oversee all aspects of case disengagements including drops, referrals, sub-outs, and out-of-state case transitions ensuring compliance, minimizing liability, and maintaining clear and professional client communication. This is a full-time, onsite position at our Los Angeles headquarters with opportunities for long-term growth within the firm, including potential transitions into other departments over time.
Responsibilities include:
- Oversee all disengagement-related processes, including case drops, referrals, sub-outs, and transfers of both California and out-of-state cases
- Evaluate case files to determine appropriateness for disengagement, referral, or sub-out
- Draft, review, and approve disengagement letters, referral agreements, sub-out agreements, and all other transition-related communications
- Ensure compliance with ethical rules, State Bar requirements, and jurisdiction-specific rules related to out-of-state case transitions
- Coordinate with attorneys, paralegals, and case managers to prepare complete and accurate files prior to disengagement or transfer
- Communicate with clients regarding disengagement decisions, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and compliance with all applicable regulations
- Conduct legal analysis to identify risks associated with disengaging or transferring both in-state and out-of-state cases
- Maintain accurate and organized records of all disengaged, referred, sub-out, or transferred cases
- Provide guidance and training to staff involved in disengagements, including jurisdiction-specific procedures for out-of-state matters
- Monitor and manage workflow to ensure timely processing and avoid liability issues related to deadlines or case transitions
Skills & Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law in California
- 1+ years of experience in personal injury law or a related field
- Familiarity with referral, sub-out, and disengagement procedures, including out-of-state case transitions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess case viability and risk
- Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities
- Experience handling sensitive conversations with professionalism and empathy
- Ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, case managers, and operational teams
