About the role:
In this Corporate Counsel role, you will manage legal matters to protect FIS' intellectual property rights. You will work closely with the company's management, development, and product teams to protect our innovations by providing strategic intellectual property counseling on topics including patents, trade secrets, open-source software, software licensing, and related litigation. Your primary focus will be developing our innovation protection strategy with an emphasis on identifying strategic innovations that align with our business objectives for patent filing and partnering with our law firms to draft, file and prosecute patent assets protecting those innovations. You will also provide counsel on intellectual property aspects of software product development including use of open-source software and draft, review, and negotiate source code licenses.

The FIS Legal team is comprised of approximately 200 attorneys and paraprofessionals worldwide who enjoy being an advisor to and partner with our businesses to help the company achieve its goals. We work collaboratively with each other and with our business colleagues to solve problems in an effective and pragmatic manner. We view our role as one of supporting our business leaders in a variety of legal matters, and we strive to assist our businesses in meeting their objectives with sound, reasonable and well-considered legal counsel.

What you will be doing:
  • Providing legal advice and guidance to the enterprise and its business units on a wide range of intellectual property law matters, such as patents, trade secrets, open-source software, and software licensing and related litigation.
  • Performing legal research and analysis on intellectual property law issues.
  • Focus on and assist with strategically developing a robust and innovative patent portfolio including identifying innovations for patent protection and working with outside counsel to file and prosecution applications covering those innovations.

What you bring:
  • A law degree, such as a Juris Doctor or other comparable degree, admission to practice law in the appropriate jurisdiction, and admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Bar.
  • 2-6 years of legal experience with a primary focus on patent prosecution in a corporate in-house or law firm environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of US and international intellectual property laws with a focus on patent laws as well as extensive experience with patent prosecution and portfolio management.
  • Strong communication, research, writing, and analytical skills
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to review and evaluate multi-faceted issues and counsel business colleagues on complex legal questions relating to various intellectual property issues.
  • Experience advising clients in a complex, diversified, matrixed, global organization.
  • Experience prioritizing and managing multiple projects efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced business environment and driving complex projects to completion.
