Job Purpose:
The IP Counsel role is critical to protecting the IP of A French-American, UK-Domiciled Global Oil and Gas Company and will serve as an advisor, negotiator, educator on IP related matters. This role provides high-level legal support to regional and global business segments covering any intellectual property issues that arise, facilitates the creation and protection of IP within the company by proactively fostering collaboration and respect for IP and our IP processes, and improves core competencies through mentorship and training. It will be a member of the IP Legal Team, with responsibility for managing IP issues within the Surface business, which has hubs throughout the world and will also support New Energy and Subsea businesses with new IP development as well as risk assessment and management.

Job Description:
  • Provide strategic guidance to business partners regarding patent matters, including landscape studies, competition portfolio reviews, freedom-to-operate opinions, invalidity opinions, etc.
  • Managing outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications
  • Facilitating regular patent committee meetings to review potential new intellectual property and existing portfolios
  • Assisting in the drafting, reviewing, and negotiating of technology-related contracts, including inbound/outbound licenses, joint development agreements, and joint industry projects.
  • Assisting in the management of IP-related litigation and patent proceedings, including IPRs and oppositions
  • Performing IP reviews for due diligence projects
  • Building and maintaining a strong IP culture company-wide by holding regular training sessions to educate employees about IP and IP-related company policies.
  • Become an embedded strategic partner with business clients by developing close relationships with leadership and engineering community, understanding the commercial landscape of the business as well as our products and commercial offerings.
  • Establish close, collaborative relationship with the legal team to provide subject-matter expertise when the need arises

You are meant for this job if:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering.
  • U.S. qualified lawyer (J.D.) with current state license.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • 3 years minimum experience practicing intellectual property law at a law firm or in house, focused on patent drafting, patent prosecution, patent proceedings, and preparation of patent options.
  • Fluent English verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work across multi-cultural teams.
  • Self-motivated with ability to provide clear guidance to stakeholders.
  • Creative problem-solving to mitigate risk while facilitating business interests.
  • Litigation and contract drafting experience preferred
