Job Summary:
We are seeking an Insurance Coverage Attorney to join our established coverage practice. This attorney will advise commercial insurers on first- and third-party coverage matters, prepare coverage opinions, evaluate complex claims, and defend insurers in bad faith litigation.

The ideal candidate enjoys careful legal analysis, sophisticated policy interpretation, and practical problem solving. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced coverage attorneys on significant California insurance matters while maintaining meaningful client contact.

Success in this role requires exceptional legal research, writing, analytical, and litigation skills.

This position is fully remote. Attorneys are welcome to work from our San Francisco office as often as they prefer, but office attendance is not required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Analyze policies, endorsements, and exclusions to determine whether a duty to defend and/or indemnify exists under third-party liability claims
Draft detailed coverage memoranda evaluating underlying complaints, claim files, and other extrinsic evidence against policy language and controlling case law
Evaluate first-party property and coverage claims, including policy interpretation, exclusions, and conditions precedent
Research and apply California insurance coverage law to complex claims and litigation matters
Evaluate tenders of defense from insureds and recommend acceptance, denial, or reservation of rights
Defend insurers against bad faith claims (breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing), including claims handling review, discovery strategy, and litigation support
Assess claims handling conduct for reasonableness and advise on mitigating bad faith exposure before and during litigation
Handle declaratory relief, contribution, subrogation, and bad faith litigation as needed
Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

J.D. and active license to practice law in California (bar admission in other relevant jurisdictions a plus)
2+ years of experience in insurance coverage analysis, preferably on the insurer side, spanning both first and third party claims
Strong working knowledge of California duty to defend standards, exclusion interpretation principles, and bad faith liability standards
Litigation experience defending bad faith claims, including familiarity with Brandt fees, punitive damages exposure, and claims handling discovery
Exceptional legal writing skills, including the ability to prepare well-organized coverage opinions supported by accurate legal research and citations
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously while meeting deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with both property and casualty lines
Familiarity with Westlaw/Lexis research workflows and cite-checking practices
Experience advising claims professionals, claims managers, or underwriting personnel regarding coverage positions
Trial or mediation experience in bad faith litigation
