Job Summary:
The Department of Business and Industry is recruiting to fill an unclassified Insurance Counsel/Hearings Officer position within the Division of Insurance. This position can be filled in either Las Vegas or Carson City depending on the chosen candidate and the needs of the agency.

The Nevada Division of Insurance envisions a marketplace where consumers are confident in their insurance choices, insurers operate responsibly and transparently, and Nevada remains a national model for fair regulation, consumer protection, and industry stability. nsurance Counsel is general counsel for the Division, and reports to the Division's Chief Insurance Counsel.

The Division seeks a curious and patient Nevada attorney with experience in administrative and civil law as well as presiding over legal proceedings (e.g., mediator, arbitrator, judge, hearing officer, or other intermediary), understands criminal law, and has a general understanding of insurance and other risk-transfer concepts.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Currently admitted to and in good standing with the Nevada bar
  • Competency with legal information technology systems (e.g., legal research platforms, case management system, and e-discovery tools)

Job Duties:
The incumbent advises and counsels the Commissioner on any and all matters relating to the regulatory responsibilities of the Division; advises and counsels Division staff on legal issues related to compliance and operations; represents the Division in administrative hearings and contested cases; prosecutes violations of the Insurance Code; advises Division staff on drafting proposed legislation and regulations; researches legal issues and writes formal opinions, proposed legislation or regulations, pleadings, memoranda, and other correspondence; and provides general legal support as assigned. They may be appointed by the Commissioner to serve as hearing officer in administrative hearings.
