The Terezakis Law Firm, PLLC, is an established Nassau County immigration and criminal defense firm. For more than 40 years, we have provided high-quality legal representation to Long Island's immigrant community. We are looking for a motivated attorney who is interested in building a career in deportation and removal defense, and family-based immigration.Our ideal candidate is someone with excellent writing skills; who likes appearing in court; is responsible, dedicated, and committed to learning.
We do not have a “high volume” practice. Our attorneys and paralegals work together in a collaborative, team-based approach, on a limited number of cases. We are committed to providing high quality, effective, innovative, and compassionate legal representation to our clients.
Excellent work environment: bright, windowed, offices, in a nice office building, located a block from the Mineola, LIRR, train station. There is a cafeteria on site and free parking for our team.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a caseload of deportation and removal defense cases;
- Prepare bond applications and conduct bond hearings;
- Prepare applications for relief, including cancellation of removal (EOIR-42A and 42B), waivers, adjustment of status, asylum, withholding of removal, and CAT, and present those cases at individual hearings;
- Research and write motions, memoranda of law, and BIA appeals;
- Track and meet filing deadlines;
- Work with paralegals, and eventually supervise them, to make sure cases are prepared thoroughly and on time;
- Conduct client intakes and keep clients informed about their cases;
- Appear before the New York City Immigration Courts and USCIS offices as needed.
Requirements:
- JD from a U.S. law school
- Admitted to the New York State Bar
- Proficient in English
- Strong research and writing skills. Ideally you genuinely enjoy writing.
- A commitment to high-quality legal work and to winning our clients' cases
Preferred:
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Minimum 1 to 2 years of legal experience in any field, immigration or criminal defense experience is a plus.
- Exposure to immigration or criminal law through law school clinics, externships, internships, moot court, or volunteer work.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary: $85,000 to $95,000, D.O.E.
- 1/3 of legal fees from cases originated
