Description:

An Immigration Attorney, a young and growing firm is seeking an immigration attorney with experience in immigration, litigation or legal writing. We will also consider those without experience who have a strong interest in our practice area. Our firm primarily works with detained clients in several Louisiana detention centers who are seeking asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture, as well as cancellation of removal and adjustment of status. We also work with some non-detained clients throughout the United States in family related immigration filings and their removal defense cases.

Strong preference for bilingual candidates who speak fluent Spanish, will also consider fluency in another 3rd language or candidates who do not speak another language.

Primary job functions may include:
  • Attending hearings before EOIR either virtually or in-person depending on location and availability. Hearings consist of credible fear reviews, bond hearings, preliminary “master calendar hearings”, and individual hearings (or final hearings to adjudicate applications for relief).
  • Speaking with and meeting with clients in detention centers.
  • Preparing clients for credible fear interviews.
  • Participating in credible fear interviews over the phone with Asylum Officers.
  • Writing and filing appellate briefs, motions to reopen, motions to reconsider and other submissions to the Board of Immigration Appeals
  • Writing and filing motions for custody reconsideration (bond), change of venue, continuance, and other pleadings with a variety of Immigration Courts around the United States
  • Compiling and filing evidentiary submissions – including personal documentary evidence and country conditions – in support of client's cases for relief from removal
  • Writing requests for parole, medical release, and release under order of supervision.
  • Ensuring that all filings have been received and accepted by the relevant agencies and uploaded to individual client files in our firm's database
  • Staying up-to-date on changes in immigration law – particularly in the Fifth Circuit – and policy.

Your responsibilities and role will depend greatly upon your experience and interests. We have roles to fill focused either on legal writing, litigation, or a mix of both. We have a preference for persons located in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, or Mississippi but due to the availability of Webex and telephonic hearings and client visits - we would also consider remote attorneys in other states.

Desired Skills:
  • Expertise in immigration law, particularly removal defense
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with the online filing systems used by EOIR and ICE
  • Ability to multitask
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Public speaking skills and ability to litigate before EOIR.
  • Excellent legal writing ability
  • Interest in developing any of the above.

Applicants must be licensed to practice law in at least one state in the United States.
