Primary Duties:The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a dynamic leader and experienced litigator to head the Criminal Division's Economic Crimes unit, which includes responsibility for the elder justice-focused Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation Unit (ANE Unit). This is an opportunity to litigate complex economic crimes cases as well as to meaningfully contribute to elder justice across Kansas, and to mentor and supervise other attorneys to further the mission of the Office of the Kansas Attorney General. The successful candidate will have an exemplary record as an ethical litigator and a vision to improve and support the work of the Economic Crimes unit.
Economic Crimes attorneys prosecute state court cases across Kansas in a wide variety of areas, including: elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation; white collar and embezzlement crimes; insurance fraud; securities fraud; livestock theft; organized retail crime; state benefits fraud; racing and gaming violations; public official and misconduct cases; and election crimes. The First Assistant Attorney General leads a team of criminal prosecutors and support staff and maintains positive working relationships with county and district attorneys, as well as state and local investigating agencies.
In overseeing the ANE Unit, the First Assistant Attorney General leads a team of program consultants and the statewide multidisciplinary team coordinator to provide education and support on elder and dependent adult topics to all stakeholders, including: county and district attorneys, local law enforcement, social services agencies such as DCF and KDADS, local area agencies on aging, and other agencies as needed. The First Assistant Attorney General also serves as the chair for the statewide Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Prevention Council.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supervising a team of capable professionals with diverse skills and expertise to ensure matters are consistently investigated and prosecuted proactively, efficiently, and with reasonable speed.
- Developing and presenting training to law enforcement and prosecutors statewide.
- Maintaining a criminal caseload consistent with the First AAG's other duties.
Travel: Some travel within the state of Kansas for hearings, trials, and other prosecution-related duties will be required. Occasional out-of-state travel for training.
Qualifications:
Licensing & Certification
- Membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission without examination.
- A valid driver's license
Minimum Qualifications:
At least five years of experience as a state, federal, or military criminal prosecutor or criminal defense attorney.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience supervising attorneys or related staff (e.g., investigators, legal assistants, analysts)
- At least ten years of experience as a state, federal, or military prosecutor
- Significant experience litigating off-grid cases in state court

The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
