Davis Wright Tremaine LLP seeks a mid to senior associate or counsel to join its nationally recognized energy practice in San Francisco (preferred), Seattle or Portland.The candidate will support a sophisticated energy commercial transactions practice representing developers, technology companies, energy market participants, investors, utilities, and emerging energy businesses navigating the rapidly evolving energy landscape. The role will focus on energy commercial contracts and commercial transaction work across the energy and digital infrastructure sectors. While we anticipate data center-related energy work will represent a significant component of the work that this candidate will do, we expect the candidate will have significant opportunities to also do traditional energy commercial work including for renewable and battery storage developers. The candidate should be familiar with state and federal energy regulatory frameworks.
This is an excellent opportunity for an associate or counsel interested in working at the intersection of energy regulation, infrastructure development, renewable energy, emerging technologies, and complex commercial transactions.
Responsibilities:
- Draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including energy supply, development, procurement, and operational contracts
- Support transactions involving energy project development, financing, acquisitions, and asset sales
- Advise on renewable energy credit (REC) transactions and wholesale and retail energy market matters
- Counsel clients on energy matters that may involve renewable energy, distributed energy resources, storage, transmission, demand response, energy efficiency, and decarbonization initiatives
- Collaborate across practices on energy transition, infrastructure, environmental, technology, and commercial matters
Qualifications:
- JD from an accredited law school
- Admission to practice in California
- 3+ years of relevant experience in energy transactions (a strong commercial transaction background with a proven interest in energy will also be considered)
- The ideal candidate will have strong drafting and negotiating skills, teamwork skills, and the ability to independently manage some components of deals.
- Familiarity with energy industry regulatory frameworks, utility operations, or renewable energy development
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Interest in emerging technologies, renewable energy, grid modernization, and energy transition issues
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
