What You'll Do:
The Employment Counsel will advise stakeholders across Viasat on a wide range of labor and employment matters, with a primary focus on legal support in the United States. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day practical advice and counselling to Viasat's People and Culture (HR) (“P&C”) team, and will manage employment-litigation as needed.

As a key member of the Viasat Legal team, the successful candidate will strategically influence business stakeholders at all levels to appropriately recognize and mitigate risk. With the assistance of outside counsel as needed, the successful candidate will also be called upon to provide legal support in certain markets outside the United States, such as Mexico, Brazil and Australia.

The Day-To-Day:
  • Provide legal support to the business areas and P&C covering all aspects of employment law, with a particular focus on the law in California where Viasat has a significant employee presence.
  • Provide advice and strategy recommendations on a wide range of employment topics including hiring, promotions, performance management, disciplinary matters, grievances, location/entity management, terminations, reorganizations, contingent worker management, sick leave, working time regulations, and other areas relating to employment law.
  • Draft and review a wide range of employment related documents (e.g., employment contracts, agreements, contingent worker agreements, compensation letters, etc.) and relevant employment policies.
  • Oversee employment litigation and related disputes, including cost-effective management of outside counsel.

What You'll Need:
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in labor and employment law, either in-house or at a law firm.
  • Highly responsive to internal clients and business stakeholders.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and strong written work product.
  • Pragmatic, commercial approach to advising internal clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to think practically when considering risks and be solution-oriented with advice.
  • Genuine interest in learning the labor and employment laws in international jurisdictions as needed, and to advise global members of the Viasat team.
  • Collaborative team player with flexibility to align with colleagues in different time zones.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Willingness to handle matters outside primary area of expertise.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
  • Good common sense.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.

What will help you on the job
  • Significant experience with labor and employment law in California is a plus, but not essential
  • Experience working in a global organization and supporting employees across multiple jurisdictions.

Salary Range:
$137,500.00 - $230,500.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $170,500.00- $255,500.00/ annually
